biodynamic wines
The theory of biodynamics was born in 1924 by Dr Rudolf Steiner in a series of lectures on agriculture. All of the organic methods are incorporated (ie no synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or chemical fertilisers) but a stricter approach is used which also takes into account the natural rythms of the earth and the stars with the vine and its capacity to bear the best quality fruit.
A special yearly calendar defines the timings for when all of the vineyard tasks have to be completed. Special preparations (water based sprays to homeopathic strengths) containing small traces of certain vegetal and mineral matter (silica, nettle yarrow, willow, camomile) and also cow dung are used to activate the soil and increase fertility, as well as protecting the vines from diseases and pests.
The greek Demeter symbol for the Earth goddess is used to signify valid certification.
You may have been watching the Channel 4 Program "Monty's Vineyard" about wine-lover Monty Waldin pursuing a dream to produce biodynamic red wine. You have to go through a 3 year conversion period before you can be certified as a biodynamic wine producer - see below for all the certified biodynamic wines in our range!
